History & Mission

Mission
The mission of The Goizueta Foundation is to empower individuals by partnering with innovative non-profit organizations to produce lasting change in the areas of education and family services.

History
Roberto C. Goizueta established The Goizueta Foundation in 1992 to provide financial assistance to educational and charitable institutions. The Foundation is a private, general purpose, grant-making foundation which includes a limited staff and a Board of Directors comprised of four members.

Mr. Goizueta was Chairman, Board of Directors, and Chief Executive Officer of The Coca-Cola Company until his untimely death in October 1997. He was a native of Cuba and a graduate of Yale University. In 1954, Mr. Goizueta joined the technical department of The Coca-Cola Company in Havana, Cuba, where his family and he resided until 1960, when they relocated to the U.S. He held various positions of increased responsibility at The Coca-Cola Company prior to being elected President and Chief Operating Officer and a Director in 1980, and Chairman, Board of Directors, and Chief Executive Officer in 1981.  Mr. Goizueta was a Director of SunTrust Banks, Inc., SONAT Inc, Ford Motor Company, and Eastman Kodak Company.

In keeping with a long tradition of civic service at The Coca-Cola Company, Mr. Goizueta also served as a trustee of several educational institutions and on the boards of a number of national charitable and civic organizations. Mr. Goizueta felt deeply that the nation's future and the future of our country's youth depended on the strength of the American family. In creating The Goizueta Foundation, he sought to acknowledge his indebtedness to this country and to continue the commitment to philanthropic endeavors that has symbolized the leadership of The Coca-Cola Company for more than a century.

Following the death of Mr. Goizueta in October 1997, Mrs. Goizueta felt compelled to step into the role of Trustee and Chairman of the Executive Committee to ensure that his legacy would be protected and expanded.  Through Mrs. Goizueta’s vision, generosity and faith, The Goizueta Foundation has grown into an extension of their personal charity, lives and family.  Due to the thoughtful, philanthropic vision of Mr. and Mrs. Goizueta, The Foundation aims to support educational programs that promote sustainable change and have a long-term impact in the community. In order to carry out this vision, The Foundation prefers to work closely with potential grantees to encourage open communication and foster a sense of community partnership.
